Il mistero del “Wow! Signal”

Nella notte del 15 agosto 1977, mentre il radiotelescopio Big Ear, dell’Ohio State University, era impegnato nel monitoraggio della volta celeste per il progetto SETI (Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence), l’astronomo volontario Jerry R. Ehman rilevò un segnale radio anomalo e inatteso. Il segnale, della durata di 72 secondi, risultò particolarmente intenso e sorprendentemente "pulito", privo di distorsioni e interferenze.Il segnale si trovava a circa 1420,456 MHz, frequenza che coincide con l’emissione naturale dell’idrogeno neutro – il costituente più abbondante dell’universo – ed è per questo considerata dagli scienziati una frequenza potenzialmente privilegiata per eventuali comunicazioni interstellari intelligenti.Quando Ehman esaminò la stampa dei dati, colpito dalla forza del segnale (al punto da raggiungere il valore “6EQUJ5” nella notazione utilizzata dal sistema di rilevamento), scrisse a margine con una penna rossa la parola “Wow!”, da cui il nome con cui questo evento è oggi conosciuto: Wow!
